Mae Winkle

In Memoriam

We mourn the loss of our friends, neighbors and relatives who have passed. Our memories of life at the Lake are entertwined with our memories of those who shared their lives with us here.

Mae Winkle

It has been said by some that Mae Winkle was the “First Lady” of Yankee Lake. She was an organizer and a leader. When she wanted to get something done, there was no stopping her. She accomplished everything with grace and a smile. Mae transformed the Yankee Lake Club House kitchen. She initiated “Game Nights” at the Club House. Mae always personally called members to be certain that there would be enough people to play poker. Mae really enjoyed playing poker! She would come early to open the Club House and welcome all members. During the off season, she often hosted poker night at her home.
Mae loved Yankee Lake. She was one of the founding members of the “Committee to Save Yankee Lake.” She worked to form the Yankee Lake Preservation Alliance. With her diligence, we were able to purchase the Big Island, the Lake, and the dam.
Mae served on the Board of Directors of the YLPA for many years. She chaired the Social Committee, and organized many summers of fun for all members, including concerts on the dam, barbecues, and arts and crafts for children.
Mae also volunteered for many years at Horton Hospital and the Orange Regional Hospital.
She cherished her family including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She proudly displayed a blanket with the pictures of all of her eight great grandchildren. She lived with her loving daughter, Joy.
Mae was a very dear friend and she will be missed by so many at Yankee Lake. Mae's family has suggested that memorial donations may be made in Mae's name to the YLPA.
